A little more info for debugging purposes:

On any machine I have with a pnp creative card (awe32, awe64, vibra16) with
either Alsa or OSS, I get the problem, but my sb16pro doesn't with either
alsa or oss.  Maybe it has something to do with the isapnp in the 2.4
kernels?
