Notwithstanding that:

Go to the article you want score on, and press I to increase the
score, L to lower the score. You will be prompted in the mini-buffer
for a couple of things (whether to score based on author, subject,
etc, whether this is a permanent scoring rule, or just temporary). And
that's it. 

In this case, the info pages on scoring in gnus are quite helpful.
