前一陣子[1]發表了新的 Skolelinux 光碟[2]映像檔，這一版修正了不少
bug，並且採用 debian-installer。Mario Lang 非常急切地希望大家[3]幫忙修正
speakup kernel 套件中的 bug，不然我們可能得被迫放棄這個套件。

【關於在 Mac 上使用 Debian 的討論】 Slashdot 上[4]有人在抱怨在 iBook
上安裝 Debian 很困難，他也提到『Knoppix 確實把在 x86 機器上使用 Debian
這件事簡化了，但在 Mac 上有沒有類似的東西呢？』在討論中，有些讀者認為安裝
Debian 並沒有這麼困難（在 Mac 上安裝也許還要更簡單些），而且相信大家都希望
只要安裝這麼一次就好，因此套件管理才是真正的重點所在。也有讀者提到 [5]Gentoo

【和 Jamie Zawinski 吵起來了】 [14]xscreensaver 的作者 Jamie Zawinski 在
LiveJournal 上[15]抱怨 Branden Robinson [16]是超愛引起爭端的傢伙（gigantic
flaming dick）。我們實在搞不清楚為什麼 Jamie [17]認為Branden
給他的回應是在挑起爭端。Branden 在信中只是客觀地表達他的意見。Jamie
在網路上發現一個 Debian 的非官方 XFree86 套件裡的 changelog
中有他的程式的名字列在上面，但事實上他搞錯了。

【Debian 選單系統現況】 Bill Allombert
[18]表示再次有人積極地維護選單系統囉！Bill 和 Morten Brix Pedersen
修正了套件中 80 個以上的 bug，並且他們為了這個套件在 Alioth
上開了一個[19]計畫。此套件也開始[20]支援國際化（internationalisation）。他
還[21]提到，套件中的圖示不需再遵守文件中只能使用特定的 24 種顏色的規定。

【專為科學運算製作的 Quantian】 Dirk Eddelb?ttel [22]發表了一份由
[23]Knoppix 修改而成的 [24]Quantian。[25]Quantian 和 Knoppix
的不同之處，在於前者加入了 quantitative 或 data-driven
領域應用或是理論方面的使用者專用的程式。當然，它還是保有原來 Knoppix
中所有令人印象深刻的特點；幾乎能針對所有的硬體進行自動設定。如果大家對這個
計畫有相當的興趣的話，它也許會成為 Debian 的子計畫之一。

【加強 Debian 對印度語文的支援】 Jaldhar Vyas
[26]詢問大家是否有興趣針對加強 Debian
對印度語文的支援成立一個子計畫。此刻，GNOME 和 KDE
對這方面都已經有相當程度的支援。他的目標是要將支援印度文的軟體製作成
Debian 套件，或是，如果需要的話，自行撰寫這一類的軟體。此外，還要協
助現有的軟體進行 i18n 或 l10n，並且在印度推廣 Debian。

【音效檔案的使用限制】 Roberto Gordo Saez
[27]想知道如果有一個套件是以自由軟體的形式散佈，他是不是可以把其中的音效檔
案拿到別的計畫中使用呢？在他研究過 [28]chromium 這個遊戲後，發現裡面有來自

【叢集專用的 Knoppix 光碟】 Slashdot 上[30]報導了 Wim Vandersmissen 製作的
[31]ClusterKnoppix。他在 [32]Knoppix 中加入
[33]openMosix。這片光碟中包括了 openMosix terminal server、openMosix
autodiscovery、以及像 openMosix userland 一類的叢集（cluster）管理工具。

【在 Power4 高階伺服器上使用 Debian】 Florian Weps
[34]提到他有機會利用幾個星期的時間來測試一台 [35]IBM p630。在完成 AIX
的測試後，他和他的同事決定在這台機器的一個 partition 上[36]安裝 Debian

【在澳洲和巴西舉行的研討會】 Debian

【編譯 64 位元 Sparc Kernel】 Martin Pitt [44]想編譯最近的 2.5 kernel 供
sparc64 平台使用。sparc64 平台使用 64 位元的核心，但應用程式還是 32
位元的。他需要一個 cross-compiler，而現有的 egcs64 他覺得似乎太舊了點。Ben
Collins 向他[45]解釋說，這個編譯器雖然舊，但它還是可以用來編譯
kernel。而且只要修正一個 bug，你就能得到一個可用的 kernel。Ben
在信中也提到，gcc-3.3 也能用來編譯 64 位元的 kernel，但是它編譯出來的
kernel 根本無法使用。

【錯誤追蹤系統的新增標籤】 Colin Watson [46]宣佈[47]錯誤追蹤系統（Bug
Tracking System）新增了兩個標籤（tag）。『[48]lfs』用來標示關於大檔案
支援方面（larg e file supprt）的 bug；『[49]ipv6』則是用來標示 IPv6 方
面的 bug。Guido G?nther [50]表示，如果這些 bug 都有相對的標籤，那麼應該
也要再增加對各平台的標籤，以標示出問題是在什麼平台上發生的。不過，James

【文件中的恆常章節】 Richard Stallman
的一封信引起了一連串的[52]討論，其中再度探討了由 GNU [53]Free
Documentation License（GFDL）所衍生出來的問題：如果一個文件包含了恆常章節
（invariant section），依據 Debian 的條文，它會被歸類為非自由（non-free）
文件。看來 GFDL 是一個相當危險的授權證，並非只要使用 GFDL，就能保證該文件
為自由文件。

【嵌入式系統中的 Debian 套件管理】 Bruno Randolf [54]打算在一個 MIPS
的嵌入式系統中使用 Debian 套件管理系統。因此，他研究了數個有關的計畫，
但是他發現雖然看起來有很多的做法和想法，但卻沒有什麼人在做協調工作。

【GNU Emacs 的手冊可能會被歸類為 non-free】 J廨獽e Marant
[57]表示，因為手冊中的恆常章節以及採用了 GNU FDL，GNU Emacs 手冊將被移到
non-free 中。恆常章節不允許他人修改，而這違反了 [58]Debian Free Software
