My take?  Keep the file lists, the files from the control archive, the
fragment of 'available' info, and the fragment of 'status' info
somewhere appropriate, and mv/cat them to the proper places either at
the end of base unpacking or in a self-removing rc.S script at first
run.  Do checks so if someone (macs, anyone?) chooses not to install
a kernel and modules it won't be done and so won't cause them any
NEW problems.

I'll post a diff soon assuming nobody else beats me to it.
