Did you try editing /etc/inputrc? Remove the
"\C-?": delete-char
line.

As far as I can see, most people hate this. The wordt part is that the
/etc/inputrc stuff is not documented, or if it is, not where you'd
expect to find it (I believe it's in the readline docs).
