Thanks everyone for the input !
Indeed the forking service type is the correct one for this package as daemon() is called as part of the initialization sequence. (if daemon() is not available, plain fork() is called anyway)
I've adjusted debian/rules, taking into consideration Lorenzo's advice, thanks Lorenzo !

I'd prefer waiting for push permission, for sure; if that is not possible in the near future, I can also fork and file requests.
