Bug#864428: RFS: bitfield/0.6.3-1 [ITP #864358]

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply. Of course, I've been consulting the Debian policy while preparing the package. After receiving your email I re-read that chapter again, but I am still unsure what I did wrong. If I understand correctly, the name of a shared library package should include version number (so "bitfield version 0.6.3" should be named "bitfield0"). Please, confirm or correct me if I'm wrong.

libbitfield$SOVERSION (shared library)
libbitfield-dev (development files)

If you don't have soversioning in place, then it probably means that your software is still too volatile for you to think about a stable ABI / API. If that's the case, then it is not a good candidate for packaging in Debian just yet.

Best regards,

Vitalie Ciubotaru

P.S.: I am sending this email off-list, in the hope that I can clarify the problem, solve it and then report to the bugtracker.

Which prevents anyone else from the community to respond to you and provide additional help. Please keep this discussion public.

Did you read the Debian policy, in particular the shared library
section [1]? The naming convention of your packages suggest you have
not.
