The problem, is that we can't find a standard for the APIs. There is an RFC for
the protocol, but not the API.

This is part of the regex stuff. Should it really be dropped?
This list brings up a new issue. There are a lot of GNU extensions to add.
Given the time constraints on 1.0, I wonder if we should create a defered
catagory and put most of the GNU extensions in it. This would be desirable
so we could minimize the amount of documentation that has to be written
for 1.0, but lets us mark them as something to work on for 1.1.
