When doing searches, I've actually found Veronica-2/VISHNU have been pretty good.
That said, item type filtering would be awesome. I've also been thinking about a full-text
search engine for a years, mostly because I've been wanting to give myself the headache
(I mean: find the time) to implement one. Maybe someday ...

Wanna team up with me to build one?

Sure, I'd be open to that.  Drop me a line off list at wesleyteal@gmail.com if you want.

A caveat: I'm not a particularly proficient programmer (another reason I haven't given a
gopher search engine a go). I have a humanities background with only a few CS-type
courses.

The thing about Veronica-2 -- searching basd on titles
is that titles have to be have useful titiles :)

Often that may (or may not) be the case :)

And in either case you tend to end up searching for
resources (by title) rather then by resources (by content).

I think :)

I think full-text searching would complement Veronica-2 nicely IHMO
(but Cameron doesn't want to go that way... which is okay)

I was thinking of utilizing whoosh[1] and related tool(s).

cheers
