Dear Maintainer,

  * What led up to the situation?
installing a package which identifies a specific version of a dependant package in teh control file. Note, a newer version of the dependant package is avaialbe in the repo

  * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
    ineffective)?
apt install <package name>

  * What was the outcome of this action?
Error: <package a> : Depends: <package b> (=1.1) but 1.2 is to be installed

  * What outcome did you expect instead?
apt should have installed version 1.1 of package b, not version 1.2

Scenario is setup as follows:

package a (version 1.0) defines a dependency on package version b 1.1 in it's control file. The repo has version 1.0 and 1.1 of package a, and version 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 of package b.

When I run 'apt update && apt install a=1.0' I get the error:

Error: a: depends: b (=1.1) but 1.2 is to be installed

If I preinstall package b=1.1 and then package a, everything works as expected.
So, it appears that apt is ignoring/overriding the dependency versions as spcified in the control file.
Note: I am using a private repo and intending to automate a full install using a preseed file. Therefore, delegating dependency versions to each package is desirable.

No, 1.2 is the latest version and you have not pinned 1.1 higher,
so 1.2 is the candidate for b. There is no bug here.
