Okay, it seems that we misunderstand each other :-))

Could you please explain to me what you mean by "... by some means which
does not break the rule that shorter version numbers are smaller"? I can't
understand this.

It seems to me that there's something you don't like in this ~ stuff, but
I can't see what it is... I do like it anyway :-))

IMHO in an ideal world this tilde-stuff would be widely accepted by
developers, implemented in glibc's strverscmp(), used by rpm, used by all
distros and all software developers to denote pre-versions... If glibc and
rpm developers accept this feature, it would only take a few years until
world domination :-)
