I'm still seeing segfaults on the official 0.5.5.1 (Otavio Salvador's version works fine, though) if I put pins in /etc/apt/preferences. If I move /etc/apt/preferences out of the way or go back to 0.5.4 it works fine. Check to see if this is what is biting you.
