You're right,I tried moving prefrerences out of the way and it works. I haven't try upgrade yet, because I need to make sure it won't render my machine unusable, but this looks like a good point to start investigating the bug. You said that Otavio's version should work fine; I haven't tried it yet, but I assume it will be available somewhere on the web, so I'll do it as soon as I can and let you know.

I'm still seeing segfaults on the official 0.5.5.1 (Otavio Salvador's version works fine, though) if I put pins in /etc/apt/preferences. If I move /etc/apt/preferences out of the way or go back to 0.5.4 it works fine. Check to see if this is what is biting you. I was trying to find the other bug report on this, but I think it's in the middle of a bunch of merged closed bugs right now, so this is as good a place as any to bring it back up.
