Package: apt
Version: 0.5.3
Severity: critical

There are a few open problems on APT that this could be merged with, I've
not gone through the whole list - but several are probably the same thing.

I'm hoping the information here is sufficient to help isolate and solve
the problem... I could find helpful information in the extant bug reports,
nor could I figure out what was going on from `apt-get -s -u upgrade` output
even though it was voluminous.

The problem was that apt/dpkg would indicate that a package couldn't be
installed because of missing/conflicting dependancies when indeed the
dependancies are met.

I'm sorry I no longer have a log of this, but after fighting it for a
couple of weeks, and finally getting it going, I've rebooted the
affected machines.

ie:
sendmail: depends libc6 (>= 2.2.3-1), but 2.2.4-1 is to be installed
depends tcpd, but x.y.z is to be installed

I've had problems with sendmail, lintian (wanting to dump task-debian-devel),
and a plethor of other packages. The only thing that'd help was to pick
packages a few at a time `and apt-get install` them... Leaving those causing
conflicts. Sometimes `dpkg --purge <a>`, `apt-get install <b>`,
`apt-get install <a>` was needed.

The problem seems to be due to having several versions of a package
available (stable, testing, unstable, local) at the same time.

When I removed everything but unstable from /etc/apt/sources.list and
did dselect update, dselect install, the problem simply went away !!!

It's actually the same bug.

They used to be all set to fixed but someone undid that. In any event you
should upgrade to 0.5.4 which was just installed.
