When trying to do apt-get update (or any other "fetching" function),
apt-get fails with a "bad header line" message; it's not clear what
exactly the bad header line is.
Fact is that to the client it looks like you're connecting directly
to the site you specify, but the corporate firewall/etc. redirects
this through a transparent proxy, which is probably screwing things
up. I've included selected parts of strace output below to help
show what actually gets received.

As a workaroung I currently use ftp, but that fetches the Packages.gz
etc. every time, even when nothing has been changed; the http method
correctly sees there's been no change.
The same thing happens if I explicitly define a proxy with
export http_proxy=http://my.proxy.name:80/
I'm assuming that a fix isn't too hard in this case?
FYI, the proxy is HTTP-GW p1.4/1 from the TIS firewall toolkit
( http://www.tis.com ) and Gauntlet
as far as I can tell.

It's been 30 days, submitter hasn't responded and this is really a bug in
their proxy software - I cannot work around it without help.
