This is exactly what I had in mind when I sent this bug report but I
did not take the time to write it down:-(

This is a good idea.

I was understanding the error messages.

Well, personally, I prefer to have warnings and verbose errors instead
of cryptic UNIX error codes. So I vote to keep the current behavior.
