I know about the -rv option. It's one-off, i.e., you have to provide it again and again. As for .xinitrc, I thought that wayland doesn't source it on startup.

The command-line option -rv is the easy way to turn on reverse-video:

       -rv      This option indicates that reverse video should be simulated by
                swapping the foreground and background colors.   The
                corresponding resource name is reverseVideo.

and if I wanted to make my .xinitrc more portable, I'd use -fg and -bg
