Bug#827702: GNOME doesn't support Synaptics driver anymore, makes touchpad support silently suck

Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 1.8.3-2

I have a Thinkpad Yoga 2 Pro and have been using it happily for a couple of years. I've used the Synaptics Xorg driver but suddenly after upgrading my touchpad wasn't working right. The gnome-control-center mouse UI didn't show any of the touchpad related controls, middle click didn't work and while typing I would get taps so that my input would be moved around.

After some digging I noticed gnome-control-center printing the error defined here:

I removed the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package but forgot to --purge. This completely broke my configuration because it left /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-synaptics.conf. I removed that, restarted X and everything's better.

It's unclear to me if this is specifically a GNOME issue and/or what the right migration path for users should be.
