The r300g driver shipped in current libgl1-mesa-dri only works with KMS,
so with that disabled, you're probably getting software rendering.
If you can build and test upstream Mesa Git, it would be great to know
if the problem persists there with the r300g driver and still doesn't
affect the classic r300 driver.
