Hi Paul,

below, Thoams's message, since you weren't Cc'd.

i have a test file called 中文繁-üߢ.mp3. if i run /bin/ls, the filename
is displayed correctly. if i run /bin/ls --color=auto, the chinese
characters are replaced by dashed squares. copy paste still works.
colored ls in gnome-terminal works fine.

It looks fine when I paste the filename and do that - subject to the
issue that some fontsizes do not have the required glyphs. In the
largest fontsize, the glyphs before the "-" are boxes, but in the
second largest fontsize, they're recognizable. If that's what you
are seeing, as far as I know that's a problem with the fonts available.

Could you please send a status update?

If it's as I stated above, that's probably unchanged (since it appears that fonts aren't being modified that much).

Generally, the effect would be worse for TrueType fonts, since their coverage tends to be poor, making applications rely upon fontsets (which aren't implemented in xterm).
