Because having two codebases means having two piles of bugs, also
different classes of bugs, which upstream doesn't want to handle;
that's why they went for KMS only.

What matter is 2.6.32 as shipped in testing/unstable, it received lots
of bugfixes from later kernel releases.

Try with 2.6.32 from testing/unstable? If that fails as well, please
file a bug against the xserver-xorg-video-intel package, which will
tell us more about it (please attach X logs and dmesg from the failed
boot, then).
