yes there was a trouble with kms (not enabled before gdm3 starting) and 
probably another issue with the choice of the driver

i did several trial/error :
with xserver-xorg-video-radeon installed (and no other radeonhd or fglrx)
i needed to:
- add 'radeon' in /etc/modules (in order to have correct maximum resolution)
- add /etc/X11/xorg.conf  (copied below in order to use the radeon driver)

With these 2 additions the radeon driver is now working properly 
 * correct resolution
 * correct openGL performance (more or less 20-30 fps instead of 1-2 fps)
 * switch to vt1 and go back without hang

i can redo various configuration and send you /var/log/Xorg.0.log or
anything else if needed.
