Well, you can still use nouveau as long as nvidia.ko is not loaded
before nouveau.ko. You will not be able to use any OpenGL program as
long as nvidia-glx is installed, but those are usually unusably slow
anyway with software rendering.

I'm still trying to figure out how to best set up a dual boot
configuration that lets me decide whether I want to work with a free
driver, blazingly fast Linux console and super speedy X startup or use
that big non-free blob to be able to play those tempting 3D games.
Unfortunately nouveau.ko cannot be unloaded by any means, so a reboot is
required. Reminds me of those days where I used to have a Windows
partition…
