I think I know where to try this:

bash-3.00$ grep Option xorg.conf
        Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
        Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
        Option "XkbLayout" "us"
        Option "UseFBDev" "true"

do I insert a new option and restart with

/etc/init.d/gdm restart

Sure this is easy.

It was an old iMacG3 someone has lost the password for and sold it to me
as second hand. I wiped the disc completely out and was first
successful with openBSD for macppc.

So far I have always wiped the disk between every installation.

I was not successful with NetBSD.

It was a success with a squeeze debian 6, which also had amd64 and
macppc support.

After that during the now rinning partial installation, the prior
version was viped off, all partition newly created and no residues from
prior installations.

I feel it does not matter what was on the hard Disk prior to the
installation. macosx did not start, openbsd ran well, darwin did not
work, netbsd did not work, I did pay attention not to try any i386 intel
version, but the powerpc version.

I have not tried the latest fedora, which could tell me anything about
malfunctioning hardware.

I can find out the last known working installation,

debian 6 squeeze
amd64
i386
powerpc
isolinux 3.73
debian
2009-02-15

but the second attempt to install from this CD failed, IIRC. I think
because the network binaries have changed since then. Again I wiped all
partitions out and performed a clean fresh install.

I'd first like to rule out any possible hardware malfunction.

sure.

send me a suggestion for a useful xorg.conf

and I'll try.

It runs well now besides me, but no X.

is this true?

Note that recent X servers display a black screen (instead of the
classic mesh and a mouse cursor) by default, and ignore
ctrl-alt-backspace by default. Of course, if gdm does it's job, you
should see a login greeter, a chooser, or your X session, so the first
problem should not occur for you.
