Bug#571535: xorg: iMac G3 (slot loading) no X only console; Impossible to load Gnome desktop after upgrade

Problem:
no X server no video, no mouse, only console, ppc iMac G3
/etc/init.d/gdm stop start restart gives no display. ctrl + alt +
backspace gives no video result, it is exactly as if someone turns of
the monitor.
I think it is related to xorg, how can I debug and troubleshoot xorg
and the Gnome display manager? on debian ppc 5.0.4 ?

under slackware the Xserver logs to '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' (for display
0), you can add the '-audit' switch to the command-line to get more
verbose logging.

Note that recent X servers display a black screen (instead of the
classic mesh and a mouse cursor) by default, and ignore
ctrl-alt-backspace by default. Of course, if gdm does it's job, you
should see a login greeter, a chooser, or your X session, so the first
problem should not occur for you.

You could try startx instead of xdm. On the last system I tested the
display then initially looked just as black as when starting X alone,
but when I pressed a mouse button, I saw that there was twm running
and I could start applications through mouse-button menus.
