You can enable KMS with your current kernel by passing modeset=1 to the
i915 module at startup, either through the initramfs config or on the
kernel command line.

Tnx for the info.
I have changed the command line via /boot/grub/menu.lst to
 Kernel command line: root=/dev/sda5 ro vga=0x0361 resume=/dev/sda8 modeset=1

Should I see anything about KMS in the /var/log/messages file or in Xorg.0.log?

Mouse cursor still invisible in highest resolution for the Dell 19" screen.
At 1152x864 it is there, but as soon as I change to the native 1280x1024 it's gone.
Display is anything other than crisp, so I really would like to get the native resolution
back to my main screen.
