On the system under consideration, I have:

  $ cat /proc/mtrr
  reg00: base=0x000000000 (    0MB), size=  128MB, count=1: write-back
  reg01: base=0x008000000 (  128MB), size=   64MB, count=1: write-back
  reg02: base=0x00c000000 (  192MB), size=   32MB, count=1: write-back
  reg03: base=0x00e000000 (  224MB), size=   16MB, count=1: write-back
  reg04: base=0x090000000 ( 2304MB), size=  128MB, count=2: write-combining
  reg07: base=0x0a0000000 ( 2560MB), size=   64MB, count=2: write-combining
  $ free -b
               total used free shared buffers cached
  Mem:     244797440  233570304   11227136          0   11702272  110903296
  -/+ buffers/cache:  110964736  133832704
  Swap:    271392768          0  271392768

I don't know if these data may help you in shedding some light on my
problem...

Ah, I see: I was not aware of this possibility.
I'm sorry, but I am not a kernel/X11 expert...  :-(

If by "freeze" you mean that my box could experience a lockup, and I
would have to power-cycle it in order to get everything back up and
running, without permanent damage, then I could even try to perform a
few tests (under your guide)...

If by "freeze" you mean that I could damage the hardware or lose data
from my filesystems, then I am afraid I must refrain from performing
any such test: this is a production machine, not a test one, and I do
not have any ready-to-go replacement laptop (yet).
