Bug#478082: Xserver-xorg refuses to adjust to proper resolution and use Nvidia 6100 series GPU

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+10ubuntu10
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Xserver-xorg refuses to adjust to proper resolution and use Nvidia 6100 series GPU. Old version of Ubuntu 7.10 would recognise that I needed the Nvidia proprietary driver on a fresh install and would work. Latest version on 8.04, I have to go into System -> Hardware Drivers, it then recognises I need to install a proprietary drivers and says I need to reboot to have the changes take effect. I reboot and I am still stuck with 800x600 resolution at 56 hz.
