Thanks for your help, setting the modeline and preferredmode to
something sensible solved this.

It seems that the problem was caused by my monitor reporting modes via
DDC which it cannot actually display. I.e. something like "1600x1280".
I hope newer xservers are more conservative in believing the DDC data
and setting the initial mode :)
