Thanks so much for pointing that out.  It worked.  I saw that bug, but I
missed the last part.  I was working with lynx and limited screen
real-estate, though.

I spent the last couple of hours in X hell.  vesa kinda worked, but
fonts didn't show up in emacs, though  they were OK for other apps for
some odd reason.
