At "How do I stop xdm from starting at boot?"
add: Use e.g., rcconf to remove xdm's startup links. Then use
"/etc/init.d/xdm start" when you feel like starting it.

The FAQ isn't shipped these days. And the online one needs a big update
before we can ship it again (there's another bug about that). I added
your comments to the online FAQ so that they get included in the package
in the (near or not...) future. Closing.
