Wow. Geek-speak. I reckon I won't be seeing dual-head again for a while. But the i810 (now named "intel" apparently?) driver is working single-head as I would expect (except that when I tried that "xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS" command, the machine locked up hard (I thought *nix was supposed to be more resilient than to lock up at the hands of a non-root user...)), so you can go ahead and close this ticket.
