Package: xfree86-common
Version: 4.0.2-1
Severity: important
I installed xserver-common and xfree86-common from woody.
I tried to configure the new X server.
First, I configured it using the "s3virge" driver. From the messages,
apparently it recognises everything and starts okay, the mouse cursor is
moving and the size of the image is what it should be. but instead of
the grey background, I get very nicely coloured vertical strips of
colours which are different every time I call it like this:
# XFree86 -dpi 100 -xf86config XF86Config-4
I don't think that this is normal.
Trying to use the "vesa" dirver instead of "s3virge" was unsuccessful,
because it says that he finds no screens to use (?).
Next, I tried
# xf86cfg -dpi 100 -xf86config XF86Config-4
The XFree86 server starts as before, showing the same strange
background, then a window with a white background appears in the upper
left corner of the screen, some pictures appear inside this window, then
the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and the background
(without the window) appears again. Sometimes the screen does not go
black, and the window just disappears.
On the console, these messages are printed:
Module ABI versions:
XFree86 ANSI C Emulation: 0.1
XFree86 Video Driver: 0.3
XFree86 XInput driver : 0.1
XFree86 Server Extension : 0.1
XFree86 Font Renderer : 0.2
Loader running on linux
Illegal instruction (core dumped)
and then, after I exit the server with Ctrl-Alt-BS, I get:
X connection to :8.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
If asked and shown the direction, I can investigate more.

Ok, thank you, closing this bug then. If anybody ever reproduces the
problem, feel free to reopen.
