There have other reports like this one in the past. For instance,
recently, "Bug#412275: no display and system freezes after adjusting
time with KDE clock on 945GM graphic chip". We could probably merge
them, even if the symptoms are not exactly what your seeing. From what I
remember, there have been some attempts to fix these problems, but it
didn't actually fix the problem.
I didn't find a relevant bug upstream though.
