I can't imagine I'll ever hit the problem again, actually I'd solved my
problem before making the report.  I just wanted to point out how the
error messages were generated in a suboptimal way.  Also, I believe the
script tried to display some messages with xmessage, when it was trying
to say why the X server failed to start - obviously a poor strategy.  If
nobody intends to fix this, I guess close the bug.
