Thanks. But, you don't even need to try this old config file. It is sure
that you won't get 1024x768 since there is only 800x600 and 640x480 in
the mode list:

       DefaultDepth 24
[...]
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth 24
               Modes "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection

What I would like you to do, is:
1) save your XF86Config-4 file
2) remove it so that there is no /etc/X11/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4)
3) run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. It will ask you some questions
again and generate a new config file. This is the one I want you to try.

Again, you can only get one of the resolutions that are listed after
"Mode" according to your screen depth (16bits currently, 24bits in your
old file). If you don't get 1024x768 again, please send me this new
config file that dpkg-reconfigure generated, in case it is different
from the old one.

By the way, I don't think you need any HorizSync or VertRefresh on a
laptop LCD screen. If dpkg-reconfigure ask you whether it should
generate those lines, you should say "no". I even think I saw
dpkg-reconfigure telling me that these lines was not required on a
laptop. But, I don't remember whether it was with a Debian Sarge or not.

If you want to talk to other people running Debian, there are plenty of
IRC channels, for instance #debian. But it is much more a media I would
use to ask some questions, not really to learn lots of things and meet
people. debian-user@lists.debian.org might help too. Or better, look for
something like a LUG (Linux User Group) in your neighborhood.

Good luck.
Brice
