Openchrome for debian or patches?

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire 1350. Support for its KM400 has always been
difficult, not least since the openchrome/unichrome split. 3D is OK, but
it has always been unreliable when switching VTs or opening new X
sessions. Typically the backlight is switched off requiring reset.

I have just upgraded to the latest xserver-xorg-video-via which still
has the problems. However, I have a patched openchrome driver which fixes this for me.

I would like some advice on how to get this into debian so I don't have
to fiddle with the installed package every time.

The options seem to be:

Patch debian to fix the bug.

  or

Create a separate debian package for the openchrome driver (I suppose
there could also be one for the unichrome driver too).

Do we want separate, alternative driver packages?

Could I have opinions on which is the better way to go, or any other
options I have not considered.

Thanks,

Mark
