Automagic configuration is something I have planned as a goal for the
etch+1 release. We could do significant changes right now, but I feel that
the time is too short from here to etch to introduce anything significant.
Also, upstream work such as input hotplugging and monitor hotplugging with
randr 1.2[0] will allow us a cleaner method of doing this than we currently
have.

Doing things like AllowMouseOpenFail by default introduces other bugs (see
the archives of this list for an example of a recent discussion of this
issue) so we don't want to introduce that by default. More sensible
autodetection mechanisms, particularly ones that don't require editing
xorg.conf, are more than welcome if you'd like to contribute code in this
area.

[0] I was at the gnome summit watching Keith demo this today, and let me
tell you guys, it's really hot. It'll probably land in 7.2 according to
discussions today, but having good driver support for it will take a while
so I don't think it's worth pushing for in Etch given our timeframe. Oh...
but how I want it. I'll post something about the summit meetup, which had a
number of X guys, a little later if people are interested.
