I don't think so as this would be very likely to lead to user errors. What could be suggested is adding "Other" to a quite short list of common resolutions and then have *another* debconf question which could be a "String" question as you suggest. This would indeed also help shortening the huge resolution list to something shorter (very long multiselect lists are not really good from the installer POV because most users do not notice that they can scroll down the list). An alternative is an "Other" selection which shows a very long list of resolutions just like it's done right now.
