Could you tell us which version of libice6 is installed on your system?
  

libice6:  Installed: 1:1.0.0-3

(by the way, you should consider using the reportbug tool, which adds
useful information to bug reports, like versions of depended-on
packages)
  

I have tried using the reportbug tool but since the affected machine is so
fragile at the moment it's a bit hard for me to embed the requested
information via copy and paste. I have luckily access to my mail program
now, but no shell at all! As soon as this problem is solved I will go ahead
using reportbug.

Also please report the output of 'ldd /usr/lib/libSM.so.6' to the bug
address.
  

ldd /usr/lib/libSM.so.6 gives the following output:

linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
libICE.so.6 => /usr/lib/libICE.so.6 (0xb7f98000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xb7e43000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x80000000)
