Doing a simple ltrace -r xfd -fa Sans shows this: > 0.000125 XftFontOpenName(0x8055518, 0, 0x805a86c, 0xb7db296c, 1) = > 0x8079240 > 5.373982 FcCharSetFirstPage(0x811dd98, 0xbf81b7e0, 0xbf81b800, 0, > 0xb7d77f30) > notice that the call to XftFontOpenName takes ~5s!. > I don't know if it's actually libxft2's fault, but it's where the > function cames from. I suspect you've been fooled by missing symbols here; the FcCharSetFirstPage function should execute in a tiny constant amount of time. It's much more likely that some font information isn't getting cached properly, or that you have some font which is confusing fontconfig. Try 'fc-cache -v' and see if that takes a long time, if so, send along the output of 'FC_DEBUG=384 fc-cache -v' and I might be able to figure out what's going on. -keith
