[rhardy@webcon.ca: Re: Debian's evdev patches and evdev's /tmp/.X11-unix/evdev0]

Somewhat belatedy, I am forwarding these remarks by Robert Hardy on our
evdev patches.

I don't think I am anymore...

I'm evaluating Debian's evdev patches to xorg-x11 (or perhaps Gentoo's
adapation of Mr. Hull's original patches it isn't clear.)

I'm trying to figure out if they can be made to work in other distributions
and if they can be generalized to the point where they have a better chance
of gaining wide spread acceptance. At very least I would like to add more
info to a howto wrt/ how to get them working with a USB switch.

Never mind, I figured it out from the source. I'm sure you don't care but I
now have a working evdev patched xorg-x11 Fedora Core 2/3 rpm.

I'm sorry it has taken a while to get back to you.

Actually, we do care -- or more precisely, will, once the packaging of XOrg
for Debian is underway. We're simply focussed on stabilizing our
heavily-patched version of XFree86 4.3.0 for the sarge release right now.

Thank you for your work!

Unfortunately I ended up giving up on them. I likely still have the SRPM
sitting somewhere. The concept of the evdev driver finding devices
automatically is great, however it really doesn't get me anything because it
doesn't deal well with the devices disappearing/not being there.

I was trying to use that patched xorg server on a box with a USB switch. If
I happened to (re)start X with the keyboard/mouse switched to me 2nd PC, X
would bomb saying it couldn't find a mouse/keyboard or something similar...

The standard xorg drivers don't have this problem.

I had some other issues too but I've forgotten them now...

Regards,
Rob

I see...

Do you mind if I forward your message to the debian-x list? I didn't know
the evdev code code had these problems.

I don't mind.

I believe warp's original documentation explicited said not to specify the
device to be used with the evdev driver but to use filters. I had an
unusable X server whenever I tried to use filters AND an explicit Option
"Device" line for the mouse etc.....

Some of my experience is described in the thread:
http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfsection/article.php?com_mode=flat&com_order=0&articleid=46

I'm not sure if I tried the configuration of an explicit device and "Dev
Name" without a "Dev Phy". About a month after my post someone claimed this
was how debian sarge handled it.

Rob
