Cheers,
I think that you should use an iso10646-1 font, like unifont.

I tried to use "-kochi-gothic-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-jisx0208.1983-0" and "-kochi-mincho-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-jisx0208.1983-0" in xmms.
The main menu and playlist of xmms became all illegible glyphs.
I have no idea why the main menu and playlist of xmms in your screenshot still show correct Japaness characters.

Then, I tried to use "-kochi-gothic-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso10646-1" and "-kochi-mincho-medium-o-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso10646-1" in /etc/gtk/gtkrc.utf-8,
All gtk+ based applications fail to calculate width of fonts.

I have tested several Traditional/Simplified Chinese fonts. They have no such problem.

I think that there might be something wrong in /etc/defoma/hints/ttf-kochi-gothic.hints and /etc/defoma/hints/ttf-kochi-mincho.hints.
I'm working on it. Please be patient...

I suggest that you may try to use "-gnu-unifont-medium-r-normal--16-160-75-75-c-80-iso10646-1".
It is an unicode , fixed, fast, and good-looking font.

Regard,
Tetralet.
