Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.1.0-9
Severity: normal

Howdy.

Recently after a apt-get upgrade my system started crashing after I left it a while. I variously have tried monkeying with kernels and uninstalling packages I didn't think I needed.

Anyway, I _think_ I've tracked it down to a problem with OpenGL. Whenever xscreensaver calls a mode that involves GL (pick one, any one - cage, atlantis, etc etc) the system will have an unexpected result.

If I'm lucky, X will just bomb out and gdm will recover to a login prompt. More often, however, X will just lock. The system still works remotely, but X cannot be killed, so the ol' reboot needs to be employed (it's possible that there's a way of resetting the X console that I'm not aware of).

This is more of a pain than anything else - the easy fix is to purge xscreensaver-gl package :) But it'd be nice to have the shiny GL 'savers.

My hardware is nVidia GeForce2-MX (Pure, 32Mb); my kernel is compiled with Direct Render Manager, but naturally, nothing else because there are no DRI modules for nv. I also have /dev/agpgart support, using the Intel 440LX/GB/GX. Kernel is 2.4.14 with ext3 patches (which I installed to cut down on the fsck times after system crunches). I've tried it variously with 2.4.12, 2.4.13, and 2.4.13-ac8.

It's plausible it's something else on my system, but it looks like all the GL-type stuff for X is in this package.

Cheers

Richard

This bug was the results of experimental/unofficial nvidia-glx package
incorrectly purged.

This is not possible with current debian non free nvidia-glx
drivers.

As shown in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=119474
i have managed to reproduce most of the errors by breaking
manually my installation.
Though xscreensaver-gl now implement safeties and this crash could
not happen anymore.

Regards
Alban
