I apologize for taking so long to get back to you about this.

I am working on this problem on a branch in the X Strike Force XFree86
Subversion repository[1].

If you don't switch back and forth between 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels, I
recommend the following as a workaround:

Run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and select "/dev/input/mice" as your
mouse port.

Alternatively, you could hand-edit your XF86Config-4 file to remove the
offending "Configured Mouse" stanza, and the reference to it in the "Server
Layout" section.
