When I run

setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us_intl

or

setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us_intl -variant basic

all of the letter keys on my keyboard become dead, i.e. when I strike
them no letters appear.  All numbers and most, but not all, symbols do
still work.  I have to switch back to -layout us (using the up-arrow
keys to retrieve a previously executed command that does this) in
order to get my keyboard working again.

I've experimented with several other keyboard layouts, e.g ca, dev,
and bg, and all work fine.  Only us_intl has this problem.

Thanks again.  I checked the archive file in my apt cache, and it's correct.

I found the reason for the problem:  I had set /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/us_intl 
as a symlink to ../us_intl.  I had done this several months back, when 
pc/us_intl was missing or bad (other bug reports about this, can't remember 
the details now).  It worked, but then everything got screwed up when I 
upgraded-- dpkg-deb wouldn't overwrite the symlink.  I just found the correct 
file installed as /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/us_intl.dpkg-new.

I've removed the old symlink and reinstalled all the correct file versions.  
My keymaps work correctly now.
