So, I don't see how to configure xterm so that a left click
doesn't throw away the primary selection (while still allowing
to perform a selection).

Perhaps the way that gnome-terminal behaves, for instance.
I don't think that I am able to write a patch unfortunately,
but I could look at the source to know if I can do something.
