no - how would it know where the selection started?
The primary selection should be kept as long as a new selection isn't started (from xterm or another application).
That's too vague for me to see how to proceed. I suggest you create a new (wishlist) bug report describing in detail the new functionality which you would like to see in xterm. An accompanying patch (which doesn't modify the existing mechanism) would be appreciated.
