The strace tells me that it failed very early - but not much more than that.
You might be able to get a walkback by running a copy of it without the
setuid (which is used only for utmp updating), from gdb.

4.3.0.dsfg.1-5 seems to be having problems (I'm using 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 currently)
