Try running:

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Leave all the defaults in place, except for the "Use framebuffer device"
question.  Change that from "Yes" to "No" (or the equivalent way of
declining the option in the Debconf frontend you use).

Does that resolve the problem?
